Sugarcane Breeding Institute (SBI)

Sugarcane Breeding Institute (popularly known as "SBI") was started in 1912 at Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India with the prime objective of evolving improved sugarcane varieties suited to different agroclimatic regions of the country. SBI is now a globally acclaimed leading Research Institute in Sugarcane. The varieites produced fromt this Institute popularly known as "Co" canes (after its location in Coimbatore) are global trotters. They have gone a long way in enriching sugar production in many a countries. The great strides that India has so far made in Sugarcane improvement is largely attributable to the unstinted works of the Scientists of Sugarcane Breeding Institute. The great work culture developed by the past greats of this Institute of the like Sir C.A. Barber and Sir T.S. Venkatraman is continued with undivided attention and with the blend of advancing frontiers of Scienec.

Hi Tom from Australia here.Good on you for your work with Sugarcane.I think food science will be extremely important for India and also the world in the Twenty First century.Science has the ability to destroy,ie nuclear weapons or to enhance,ie agriculture.Keep up the good work...Thanks Tom
