Dr.N. Vijayan Nair : Director since 2006 and is from the first batch of ARS (1976). Belongs to the discipline of Genetics & Cytogenetics.
Dr. R. Viswanathan: Head, Division of Crop Protection. Belongs to the didscipline of Plant Pathology
Dr. M.N. Premachandran: Head, Division of Crop Improvement. Belongs to the discipline of Genetics & Cytogenetics and is from the second batch of ARS (1977).
Dr. P. Gopalasundaram: Head, Division of Crop Production. Belongs to the discipline of Agronomy and is from the second batch of ARS (1977). Also Head of PME. Cell.
Dr. G. Hemaprabha: Scientist-in-Charge, Plant Breeding. Belongs to the discipline of Plant Breeding.

Foundation Day

Sugarcane Breeding Institute, the flagship of ICAR is not far from completing 100years of its glorious service to the nation. The ninety sixth Foundation day was celebrated in this institute on Saturday 25th Oct. 2008. VIPs from nearby Agricultural Organizations, ICAR and Retired Scientists of SBI had been invited for the function.
Dr.P. Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham was the Chief guest and delivered an inspiring speech on Research and Spirituality. Preseidential address was given by Dr.N.Vijayan Nair, Director Sugarcane Breeding Institute briefing the past achievements and the future goals, commitments and challenges of SBI. Dr. K.C. Alexander Retd. Director, SBI and Dr. H. David, Retd. Head (Entomology) were honoured during the function for their outstanding services to sugarcane and to the organization. The first Sir T S Venkataraman biennial awards for excellence in sugarcane Research and for the best Ph.D work in sugarcane Research were presented in this function. Sugarcane Breeding Institute (SBI)

Sugarcane Breeding Institute (popularly known as "SBI") was started in 1912 at Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India with the prime objective of evolving improved sugarcane varieties suited to different agroclimatic regions of the country. SBI is now a globally acclaimed leading Research Institute in Sugarcane. The varieites produced fromt this Institute popularly known as "Co" canes (after its location in Coimbatore) are global trotters. They have gone a long way in enriching sugar production in many a countries. The great strides that India has so far made in Sugarcane improvement is largely attributable to the unstinted works of the Scientists of Sugarcane Breeding Institute. The great work culture developed by the past greats of this Institute of the like Sir C.A. Barber and Sir T.S. Venkatraman is continued with undivided attention and with the blend of advancing frontiers of Scienec.
